How Many Pieces Should a Photo Puzzle Have?
Every puzzle maker asks the same first question: how many pieces? Get it wrong and the puzzle is either over in seconds or abandoned halfway. Here is a straightforward guide.
4 to 25 pieces — young children
For toddlers and early school age, stay at or below 25 pieces and use a photo they recognise: a pet, a grandparent, their own face. Our kids mode caps the count and makes everything bigger and simpler to tap.
50 to 100 pieces — most people, most of the time
100 pieces is the sweet spot for a shared puzzle. It takes a confident adult a few minutes and a casual player ten to fifteen, which is exactly the right length for something you send to a friend.
225 pieces and up — a proper challenge
Above 200 pieces the puzzle becomes an evening activity rather than a quick game. Use a high-resolution photo with plenty of detail, or the pieces start to feel unfair rather than hard.
When in doubt, send 100
If you are making a puzzle for someone else and you do not know their patience level, 100 pieces is almost never wrong. They can always remix the same photo at a different count from the play screen.
